How to open and replace a mailbox lock yourself?

The most common mistake when changing a mailbox lock is believing that you can easily adapt any model to your mailbox. This is false. Sometimes people manage to tinker with something, often with mediocre results, but more often than not, it’s impossible, so it’s better to waste a little time at the start to find the exact same lock.

Opening the mailbox lock or using a mailbox lockpick.

To open a closed mailbox lock, there are three solutions:

Small opening or lock picking.

Drilling.

Ask the postman to open the mailbox.

Small opening or lock picking

Mailbox locks are generally fairly easy to pick with two paper clips or any other improvised tool. It would be a shame not to try; you have a one in ten chance of opening it.

Purchasing the lock.

Once the lock is open, you need to find the exact same lock. The best solution is to go to a locksmith. It will generally cost you around €25, but a good locksmith will give you the exact same one. You can also find them in supermarkets, but beware of similar but incompatible versions.

If you are in La Seyne-sur-Mer, Six Fours, Sanary, Bandol, Saint Mandrier, Ollioules, Le Pradet, Hyères, or Toulon, our rate for opening and replacing a mailbox lock is €90 including tax, including travel, opening, and lock replacement, with the exception of high-security versions, which are extremely rare.
